Project: Biomes

Due Date: Wednesday March 20th
Research: Choose a land or water biome as your area of study. You may chose from the Tundra, Taiga, Temperate Deciduous Forest, Tropical Rain Forest, Grassland, Desert or Coral Reef. Once you have chosen your area of study, you will begin your research. Research will be done in class and at home.
Directions: Your project will include 4 items: research paper, map, food web, and a creation.
Rubric: Research Report ______ 100 points
*Is there a title page that includes the title of the project, student's name, teacher's name, and date?
*Are there 6 paragraphs that include accurate information?
*Is there an introduction included?
*Is there a conclusion?
*Is there a separate page for the bibliography that has at least 3 sources (one of them has to be a book, encyclopedia, or magazine)?
*Does the paper have few or no misspelled words, capital letters, and free of incomplete or run on sentences?
*Is it typed or written neatly in blue or black ink?
Map (Use your book p759 or http://www.worldbiomes.com/biomes_map.htm as an example) 25 points
*Is the correct region colored?
*Is there a key identifying the biome?
*Is it neat and colorful?
Food Web (Use your book page 743 as an example) 25 points
*Are the producers included?
*Are there a variety of primary and secondary consumers?
Creation 50 points
*Possibilities are a poster, model, diorama, power point presentation, cube, or a 3 dimensional map.
*Is it neat, colorful, and creative (no cut and paste)?
*Is the information about the biome correct?
Extra Credit 10 points
*2-minute oral presentation

Questions that need to be answered in paragraph form.
1. What's the average temperature range for your biome?
2. In what latitude is your biome found?
3. What's the common elevation of your biome?
4. What's the average annual precipitation of your biome?
5. Describe the plants found in your biome.
6. Describe the animals found in your biome. Include at least one animal that is on the endangered species list.
7. What are the natural resources in your biome?
8. What are natural dangers for your biome?
9. What are man-made dangers for your biome?
10. Choose one: How would global warming, fire, flood, or another ice age affect your biome?
**Note: Paragraph #1 will include your introduction. This paragraph should have a topic sentence, background sentence and a thesis s statement. Paragraph #2 answer questions 1 – 4 (abiotic factors). Paragraph #3 will include questions 5 & 6 (biotic factors). Paragraph #4 will include question 7 (natural resources). Paragraph #5 will include questions 8 – 10 (dangers to your biome). Paragraph #6 will include your conclusion. You will restate your thesis statement and end with a final summation of your report.
